Pesto; salad – 14 May 2011

D was painting the kitchen all afternoon, but had this easy dinner in mind. He had made pesto with a pile of basil I got at the Derby Street market last Tuesday – a shopping bag for $3 – and he just made a nice salad, complete with nasturtium, to go with it.

This was way  more pesto than necessary, which meant that there was a lot to scoop up with bread… which was brand new today, D having made it this morning.

The salad was beautiful – especially having been decorated with a nasturtium blossom – and included baby lettuce leaves from the garden (and flowers! – one has bolted), and bits of an asparagus stalk from the batch I bought today at the Bowl for tomorrow’s dinner.

We had a very interesting and delicious new wine with this – a Morgon we got today at Vino, a Grape Expectations store on 4th Street in Berkeley (where we went to see a show by a neighbor of ours!) As you can see, it was only $13.95, which for a Morgon is really cheap. It went especially well with the meal. We definitely need to get more of this.
